The Good

Enormous selection of value and quality high-end headphones available through Amazon and third party vendors. Almost everything is in stock, if you look hard enough. Amazon warranty and return policy is excellent. Prices on some top models are way below prices on other sites, making a purchase a no-brainer. More user opinions than one would care to read, but some are on the mark.

The Bad

Way too many products to sort through. Not every third party vendor rings a bell and some consumers may feel uncomfortable buying that $300 pair from "Crazy Bill's Cowboy Hat Emporium", even if Crazy Bill is a helluva nice guy. Where is that customer support phone number again? Free shipping depends on the retailer, if not coming from Amazon.

The Verdict

Possibly the largest selection in the world of headphones and some really top shelf models are available for significantly less than you would pay elsewhere. Your headphones will arrive and generally quickly. Don't rely too heavily on the customer reviews as some folks appear to be quite confused, if not deaf.

The world’s largest online retailer is better known for books, movies, and music, but it really is a surprisingly great place to shop for headphones. Not only are you likely to find almost any pair of headphones that you are looking for either through Amazon or one of its affiliates, but the prices are going to be discounted. One of the benefits of competition and choice. We went shopping for some expensive reference models from AKG, Ultrasone, Beyerdynamic, and AKG, and in some cases, the savings were more than 30% off MSRP. Our one concern was that some of the affiliate retailers were folks whom we never would have considered “headphone” retailers. There is a certain degree of comfort shopping with someone who actually specializes in headphones and not cowboy hats. Amazon’s shipping policy depends on how often you order with them, and how quickly you want your order. Our experience is that if something is in stock, it arrives within days. Shop here with confidence but avoid the retailers who do not really deal in electronics but have suddenly discovered headphones. Off the truck, anyone?
