The Good

For a 30mm driver, these headphones offer a healthy kick you’d expect from headphones with much larger drivers and at a fraction of the weight. The universal stereo mini-plug allows for easy use between most portable audio devices.

The Bad

The folding mechanism has an annoying tendency to fold up in random configurations if you place the unfolded headset aside. Also at high volumes, your audio/visual device can be heard audibly by just about everyone in your near vicinity. Most importantly, the headset’s sound is a bit on the bass-heavy side – it works for bass heavy Hip Hop, Rap, Techno, Dance, Rock, Heavy Metal, and other genres. However, the MDR 710 doesn’t offer the sort of subtlety in tone and sound you’d need.

A Decent Portable Audio Solution

Although at high volumes Sony’s MDR-710 LP is audible by just about everyone within a foot of you, you’ll be pretty satisfied with the healthy kick of the MDR 710’s 30mm drivers, its light weight and its relative ease of use between many portable audio devices despite the minor aggravation of having the folding mechanism fold the headset at random.

At $59.99 (manufacturer’s suggested retail) Sony offers yet another sleek, lightweight, portable over the head headphone with the Sony MDR-710 LP, which has a folding mechanism and hard plastic carrying case; perfect for travel, as you can stuff them into a backpack or suitcase without worrying about your headphones haphazardly breaking or bending.

Its padded vinyl earphone cups allow for hours of comfortable listening. An almost four-foot long headphone cord with a stereo mini plug allows for fairly easy use with most portable applications from laptops, computer speakers, Walkmen, Discmen, iPods and most other MP3 players.

Despite its lightness, the MDR-710 LP’s 30 mm pumps the sort of bass tones you’d expect from a 40 mm or larger driver. However, be forewarned – the folding mechanism has a tendency to fold, seemingly on its own volition and the headphones are a bit too bass heavy for the subtle acoustics. But for most applications you’ll find these pair of headphones to be pretty decent for the price.
