Why DAC?
A Digital-to-Analog conveter, aka DAC, is used to convert digital signals to analog ones. Why is this necessary? Because most of our audio signals start off in digital form (on CDs or in MP3 files) and in order for these sounds to be heard through your speakers or headphones, they need to be converted into an analog signal and the DAC does just that. Most audio players use a simple chip (keeping size and price down) to convert these signals into analog; however, a stand-alone DAC can enhance this functionality and improve the overall sound quality. A USB DAC uses a USB cable to transmit the information from the computer.
